What is the right approach to prepare Math for SSC CGL Tier 1 2017

How to Prepare SSC CGL Maths

SSC is among the most prestigious recruitment agency in India. It recruits a variety of candidates from Multi Tasking Staff to Tax Inspectors etc. In all the recruitment examination of SSC, mathematics is the soul of examination. One cannot even think of qualifying SSC exams on compromising with mathematics. Mathematics is vital because it indirectly measures one’s aptitude, strategy and planning aspects, time optimization and various personality traits of a candidate.

Hence in this section we are here with a comprehensive and well prepared strategy to hit the bulls eye. In this section, we aware you how to approach toward mathematics for SSC CGL Tier 1 Examination.

Whole course of SSC CGL is divided in two major parts.

1. Arithmetic Mathematics

2. Advance Mathematics

In SSC CGL Mains weight age of Arithmetic and Advance Mathematics is approximately 40-45% and 60-55% respectively. But in SSC CGL pre both arithmetic and Advance sections have equal weight age. But here in this section we will discuss about Tier 1 Paper of SSC CGL.

Scheme of tier 1 exam is as follow

No of questions

Marks of each question

Total Marks

Quantitative Aptitude

General Intelligence and Reasoning

General Knowledge

English Language

Math is the most reliable and scoring subject among all the above subjects. As there is a negative marking of .50 marks on each wrong question, Math here acts as strong point, as well prepared candidate can hardly obtain negative marks in Math whereas in English and G.K. negative marking is very prevalent.

How to Score 100%  percent marks in SSC CGL Mathematics

To snatch cent percentage marks in this section one should clearly understand that enormous practice with guided and well planned strategy is the only way to make it happen. Today we are here to guide you in making a perfect strategy for scoring full marks in mathematics.

First of all let’s see the chapter wise marks distribution of previously asked papers of SSC CGL.

Nature of questions

Weight age (# Q’s)

Arithmetic Math 1

  1. Scoring

2. Less time consuming. 3.Easy to Solve

4. More accuracy

This part is easy to grab and strengthen. See the strategy given below for Arithmetic math.

Age Relation

Ratio and Proportion

Arithmetic Math2

Time and Work

1. Scoring

2. Easy if proper steps are followed carefully

3. More time consuming

This part is calculative and time taking hence this part requires enormous practice, quick methods, and formulas and numerical values on finger points for speedy solution in exam.

Profit and Loss

Number Series

Mixture and Allegation

Speed Time And Distance

Data Interpretation

Advance Math

1. Tricky

2. Might take more time than usual

3. Lesser chances of solving correctly

This part is equivalent to summation of both above parts. Also this part is dynamic i.e may take less or may take more time. Also this part’s questions are a bit tricky. See the strategy given below to tackle this part.

So basically the above distribution of marks shows that whole course of this section can be divided into 2 major areas and then divided in sub topics as shown in following diagram.

Core Strategy to be adopted

For Arithmetic Section

  • Generally Arithmetic questions are easily but calculative in comparison to advance Math questions. Hence to tackle Math it is always advisable to start with Arithmetic and strengthen your basics and calculation speed, remember squares, cubes and other important formulas.

  • Furthermore, All the chapters in Arithmetic have a set of short tricks for fixed question of particular type, hence preparation of Arithmetic goes in the way that first of all (for any chapter) learn the basics and core concepts (even if they are time taking) and only after learning the basics try to learn and adopt the short tricks for particular questions. Note both basic and short tricks are important but should be learnt in a effective and organized manner.

  • After this try to practice as many questions as you can, choose one standard book for daily practice and one online platform to regularly attempt quizzes and take updates for all subjects.

  • Also take a separate notebook for short notes and quick methods and tricks. And note down every trick , formula, important concept, etc each time when you find something relevant while attempting online quizzes or while analyzing your test papers.

  • And finally take a regular revision of this notebook on short tricks whenever you get free time.

For Advance Math

  • Advance math is considered as tough in comparison to Arithmetic, but it is merely a rumour. Once you clear your basics Advance Math will be more marks snatching as compared to Arithmetic in a much lesser time.

  • For Advance math, first of all clear all your basics (clear minute to minute doubts no matter how silly it is) no matter how much time it takes, because initially it takes time to clear basics and build concepts but once you go through this you will be master of Advance math and it will convert into your strength from your weakness.

  • Like Arithmetic, here also choose one standard book and one online platform (to be followed regularly) for practice.

  • Strategy wise difference occurs in Arithmetic and Advance math at the tricky questions and formulas reciting capacity. In Advance Math formulas are very vital i.e in Algebra, trigonometry, Mensuration etc without remembering the formula it is very difficult and time taking to solve a question of Advance Math.

  • Daily Quiz practice online and making of short notes and formula tables plays a vital role here.

Important Points to remember

  • Important topics must be covered first: List down Important Topics (as shown in above table) and make sure that these chapters should be mastered without compromising even with a single topic.

  • Strengthen the weak areas: Weak and Strong areas depend upon person to person. Weak areas should be noted down and practiced upto mastery. Also keep practicing strong topics, don’t be overconfident.

  • Previous Years question papers are the key: SSC has always in a habit of repeating questions from previous years papers. Hence regular practice and revision of previous year paper enhance your ability to analyse the pattern and ability to score more.

  • Practice, Practice and Practice: As stated above practice and revision are two sides of the coin of success in SSC CGL. Hence it is highly recommended to practice a hell lot more.
